Ji Chang Wook joined the cast of the mainland Chinese drama, "The Whirlwind Girl 2."

On March 1, the Korean outlet Sports Donga substantiated previous Chinese-language reports that the 28-year-old actor was cast as the protagonist in the upcoming sequel to "The Whirlwind Girl."

"The Whirlwind Girl" was a martial arts themed series which aired 32 episodes in 2015.

According to a February 28 report by Sina, "The Whirlwind Girl 2" will begin filming on March 20. The original screenwriter, Ming Xiaoxi and director are expected to helm the project. The storyline and cast members will differ from the first installment of the series.

Sports Donga noted the actor's tenacious pursuit of theatrical opportunities in China, following growing interest from the market through his portrayal of Emperor Huizong in the 2014 drama, "Empress Ki."

"Ji Chang Wook invested more than two years in China, with local appearances, before rising to his current position," said a spokesperson for the star.

Ji recently completed "Mr. Right," a Korean-Chinese co-production that marks his television comeback, following the romantic action drama, "Healer."

"Healer" showcased his talents in stage combat and highlighted his abilities as a leading man, as audiences tuned in for his realistic chemistry with leading lady, Park Min Young.

Korean drama enthusiasts may be disappointed to learn that Ji decided to star in another Chinese-language role. However, the actor who successfully transitioned from the stage to television also announced his return to musical theater.

In addition to joining the Chinese series, Ji confirmed his appearance in a revamped version of "The Days," a musical which he starred in prior to his meteoric rise to pan-Asian fame.

According to 10Asia, the Hallyu star will join the third run of "The Days," which will be staged from August 27 through November 6, at Chungmu Art Hall Theater.

Speculation regarding his final projects continues to mount, as he is expected to join the military prior to the conclusion of 2016.
