If you're looking for a spine-tingling ghost story, "Bride of the Century" is not it. Not yet anyway.
The ghost in this new drama is barely ever around even though that might be different in the future. Unlike the ghosts in the "The Master's Sun" who supplied supporting roles in every episode, the ghost in "Bride of the Century" is elusive and just gets involved in the plot when it suits her.
It's easy to forget that it's a ghost story at all.
What the drama is really more like is "The Prince and the Pauper." Yang Jin Sung is a good Candy girl who works three jobs just to save money so she can begin a business and support her fragile grandmother in style. She saves the life of a ghost, if such a thing is possible and earns a lucky bracelet. Through this magic, she meets the family of a woman who is destined to marry the cold-hearted chaebol of a big company.
"The Prince and the Pauper" part happens because she looks identically like this other woman who has disappeared. If her look-alike doesn't marry the chaebol, it means financial ruin for her family. So the family hires Yang Jin Sung to pretend that she is this other woman. But Yang Jin Sung is not the cool and collected character that her look-alike is. She is warmer, more emotional and finds it difficult to keep her mouth shut.
The chaebol, played by F.T. Island's Lee Hongki doesn't care for the woman he has to marry. He doesn't exactly see through Yang Jin Sun's disguise but finds it odd that he's suddenly attracted to her.
How long will Yang Jin Sung have to go through with her charade? Will she actually have to marry Lee Hongki?
Complicating this even further is a curse. The first wife of the first son in the chaebol's family dies in every generation. As Lee Hongki is the first son, that means the woman he marries will die.
And that raises an interesting question, did the ghost give Yang Jin Sung the bracelet to save her life or end it? She seems to be playing matchmaker with that bracelet. And who exactly is the ghost?
Yang Jin Sung makes an adorable Candy girl, but it may be harder for viewers to accept Lee Hongki as a coldhearted character. He was so sweet as Jeremy in "You're Beautiful." His character will definitely become easier to relate to when Yang Jin Sung brings out his nicer side. Already she has him holding a fluffy white kitten.
