Uhm Jung Hwa, the actress, who played an older woman in love with a younger man in the film "The Law of Pleasures," has signed on for another noona romance.
In the upcoming drama "Witch's Romance," she will play Ban Ji Yeon, a 30-something news reporter that falls for a much younger man. Ban Ji Yeon has been hurt in love and has chosen instead to make work the most important thing in her life.
Park Seo Joon will play Yoon Dong Ha, her much younger love interest. He's smart and underemployed, working a series of part time jobs. They have a lot in common as they have both been hurt by love. A past tragedy broke his heart and sidelined his career plans.
Ban Ji Yeon's former boyfriend also reappears in her life and supplies the third wheel in this drama's love affair. "Witch's Romance" is a remake of the award-winning Taiwanese drama "Queen of No Marriage."
It will be Uhm Jung Hwa's first drama role in five years. Since she was last seen in "The Man Who Can't Get Married" in 2009, she has focused chiefly on films. And she has continued to sing. Uhm Jung Hwa first debuted as a singer in 1993 and quickly established herself as one of Korea's top entertainers. Her fifth album is one of the most successful albums for a female artist and earned her the title "Queen of Korean pop."
The Baeksang Award-winning actress began her film career in 1993 and appeared in her first drama, "Wife," in 2003. Her best known film roles are "Marriage Is A Crazy Thing," Princess Aurora," "Dancing Queen" and "Haeundae." In the last few years her films have featured some provocative scenes. The romantic scenes in "Law of Pleasures" were so racy, she asked the director to tone them down.
Her upcoming tvN drama will probably feature plenty of romantic scenes.
"We are planning to warm up the small screen with our drama just in time for the warm spring air," said director Lee Jung Hyo. "The actors' acting experience has further elevated each of their characters and the chemistry."
The noona romance follows yet another noona romance, "I Need Romance 3." There's a 19-year age difference between Uhm Jung Hwa and Park Seo Joon, so "Witch's Romance" could probably be better compared with the JTBC drama "Secret Love Affair." That drama also concerns a romance with a 20-year-age difference.
