"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 spoilers revealed that Ellen Pompeo could be leaving the series soon. It was said that the actress will not be renewing her contract to pursue another project. Show creator Shonda Rhimes, however, has yet to release an official statement with regards to the rumors.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shonda Rhimes hinted that fans will see a different side of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) in the coming episodes this season 12. Following the death of her husband, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith will know how to stand on her own feet without the support of Cristina.

Rhimes added that Derek's death is an "incredibly important" character in "Grey's Anatomy." She said that the thought of saying goodbye to McDreamy has never crossed her mind. She also mentioned that Derek and Meredith's love for each other is the perfect example of what modern love should be like.

She hinted that Patrick Dempsye's departure from the series will have a huge impact on the other cast members, not just on Meredith.

"Now, Meredith and the entire 'Grey's Anatomy' family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life," she explained.

"The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: The carousel never stops turning."

Meanwhile, Kdramastars previously reported that the coming episodes in season 12 will focus on Meredith Grey's struggles with her Alzheimer's disease. Zap2It pointed out that "Grey's Anatomy" fans have already found out about Meredith's condition, however, it was not yet dealt with in the past.

"As the show heads into Season 12, it's time to ask is Meredith's greatest battle about to begin? If you look back, the writers of 'Grey's' have been preparing for Meredith to develop Alzheimer's for several seasons but have been particularly heavy-handed in Season 11," the site reported.
