Actors Lee Byung Hun, Cha Tae Hyun, and Kim Ha Neul Confess to Suffering From This Disorder

Thanks to celebrities' openness about panic disorders, the number of people seeking treatment is on the rise. While once a taboo subject, this anxiety-related illness has caught the public's attention.

Some examples of celebrities who have revealed their struggles are Lee Byung-hun, ChaTae-hyun, Kim Ha-neul, and BIBI. Since their confessions, confirming a panic disorder diagnosis has become the new trend. In fact, it has increased tenfold in the past decade. There are suggestions that it might be similar in other countries. After all, as many as half of all panic disorder cases worldwide are either not diagnosed or misdiagnosed.

The physical signs of the condition include sudden, severe anxiety episodes with palpitations, sweating, feelings of numbness, and shaking. Japanese experts also state that a panic disorder case might result in depression or agoraphobia if the symptoms are not eliminated.

According to Daum, the information is included in recent research by Seoul Asan Medical Center, whose results have been published in the JAMA Network Open.The authors of the study found that the number of people who had been diagnosed with panic disorder was about ten times smaller before celebrities started discussing the condition in 2010.

The cases per 100,000 people in the ten years were 5.4 before celebrities could be transparent about the condition.

The cases increased to 610 in a study that ended in 2021. No less important than the size of the group of patients is its quality and clarity. If unusual for the country, such cases may overlap with the symptoms of other illnesses, leading to possible misdiagnosis. 

However, if one of the symptoms is present, experts recommend that the treated person contact a specialist promptly.
