Michelle Obama displayed her rapping skills in a video aimed to encourage American kids to go to college.
In a new rap music video produced for College Humor, a humor video site dedicated to college students, the First Lady of the United States of America, teamed up with "Saturday Night Live comedian" Jay Pharoah to encourage high school seniors to "go to college" and "fill [their] heads with knowledge," according to a report by NBC News.
Featuring a rap track penned by viral YouTube video makers, The Gregory Brothers, the rap video is part of Michelle Obama's recently launched "Better Make Room" initiative. It is a campaign aimed to boost awareness about resources intended to help American youth pursue higher education. The initiative is part of a broader White House effort to lift a dropping college graduation rate in the US.
In the video, Michelle Obama is seen sporting large sunglasses and a wrap dress. With moves and facial expressions similar to that of a professional rap artist, the First Lady rhymed as Pharoah dropped dollar bills everywhere.
"If you wanna fly jets, you should go to college. Reach high and cash checks? Fill your head with knowledge," Obama's rap went.
She also dropped lyrics such as, "South Side Chicago, we all know, we had to do overtime every night ti make it tomorrow. And everyone could really make their dream, too. Hey, kid listenin' in Michigan that could be you."
As NBC noted, Obama is from South Side Chicago who had previously spoke to students and encouraged them to work hard to get good grades to get a degree as she did back when she studied at Princeton and Harvard.
"I want to honor and empower young people who are working hard in school and pursuing their dreams - and I want to do it in a fresh and fun way," Obama said in a statement, as reported by the news network.
According to Us Weekly, the release of the rap video has gone viral and sparked a trending hashtag on Twitter. Users of the microblogging site have used the hashtag #FlotusBars and created their own hilarious Obama-inspired rap lyrics.
"My hubby run the world and my daughters on fleek," said one user in a tweet, according to Us. "You want the impossible done? Gimme a week."
In reference to Drake's "Hotline Bling," another Twitter post went, "You used to call me on the red phone, late night when you need my advice, call me on the red phone."
