Korean drama films are quite popular in today's time and age. A lot of viewers all over the world consider watching Korean movies as their favorite thing to do in their leisure time. Some may even consider it a religion. Having watched several Korean drama films, maybe even repeatedly, can make you realize certain patterns that are quite evident in the dramas that we watch.
For one, tropes are something that we all see in the stories that the dramas depict. According to the Merriam dictionary, tropes are defined as a word or an expression used in a figurative sense. It conveys meaning beyond its literal implication.
Tropes can also be understood the same way with clichés. It is very common and is usually found in all the drama that we watch and it sure ruins the uniqueness of a film.
Here are 5 tropes in Korean dramas that we are fed up with:
1. The Jerk Male Lead
This character is something very common that we all see in dramas. Korean drama writers somehow love to write about women who fall in love with horrible and despicable men. Maybe it has something to do with tsundere anime archetype which is a portmanteau of the two Japanese words tsuntsun and deredere which mean indifferent and smitten respectively.
The guy is quite aloof on the surface yet very warm and soft in the inside which a lot of women like, but it gives us the question, does he deserve such a woman?
2. The Disapproving Parents
This trope is seen in almost every Korean drama that we all have watched. Although it adds a lot of drama and thrill for the film because it something hard to attain and a lot of people find parental approval as very important.
It is uncommon that the lead roles can do something to change their parent's perspective so this leaves them crying, sobbing, wallowing and heartbroken.
3. Contract Relationships
We are so tired of watching psychologically ill males that were rejected by someone and become utterly determined to pursue the girl that got them rejected and stalk them until they get exhausted.
For every Korean drama where there is the handsome, utterly perfect male lead, there is the staler second lead that does not want to get out of the picture. Honestly, it is quite terrifying to see a character only give out bad energy and bring a plate of hassle into the table.
4. The destined Connection
Yes, this very common depiction of friends who were friends when they were young. They grow up, fall in love with each other and little do they know that they realize a fateful connection from their past lives.
Sometimes, it ruins the story because the romance feels a little bit forced or compelled.
5. The Hand Grab
Watching Korean dramas, you will eventually stumble upon a scene where one lead character is not able to verbalize or put into phrases what he wants from the girl.
This leads us to a gesture or what we call The Hand Grab. It is not only very cheesy but it could lead someone to have a dislocated shoulder. It is something that we have to be very careful about. What a hand grab says, "I cannot win you over with words, so I assert bodily supremacy over you."
Although these tropes are things that make every Korean drama that we watch, fresh new tropes would be something that can give us a novelty that makes us appreciate Korean dramas even more.
