KBS2's "Once Again," aired every Saturday and Sunday, is being criticized for sexual objectification.
"Once Again" is a family drama, wherein the thrifty father is a sweet and sour chicken restaurant owner in Yongju Market, while the mother is always squabbling her conscientious husband. Both parents raised four of their children that are troublemakers. The episodes feature Song's family, who can't get a day of tranquility along with their neighbors in the market.
But due to some scenes that reportedly sexually objectified women, KBS had to apologize for its TV series.
The producers of the show humbly said that they regret to have caused some disruption for their episode last Saturday. Furthermore, they mentioned that they would be more careful not to give rise to any inconvenience in the future, according to their online statement. Moreover, the producers will replace the episode with a recently edited version, including replays and rebroadcast.
The scenes from episodes 13 and 14 were highly criticized, wherein three female characters were wearing high heels and eloquent miniskirts. They quit their jobs at a karaoke bar and opened a seaweed rice roll (gimbab) restaurant. Their outfit resembles a woman who works for sex, including the manner of doing seducing poses, which in turn successfully attracted customers, crowding their newly-opened restaurant.
Additionally, the two silhouette bodies of women are seen in the sign of their restaurant, similar to karaoke bars doing some sort of illegal sex trade is highly occurring.
In KBS and "Once Again" online bulletin boards, furious comments were left by the viewers. One viewer commented that she freaked out while watching the scenes, and another viewer said she was embarrassed while watching the episode with her children.
The inappropriate content led one internet user to submit a petition on the website of the presidential office, stating that most scenes in the episode objectify women and unfit for families to watch with their children since the series airs at 8:00 p.m. on the weekends.
Not only "Once Again" was put on a hot seat but also "The World of the Married," the current megahit drama of JTBC.
"The World of the Married" is a story about family, love, and betrayal, played by Kim Hee Ae, Park Hae Joon, and Han So Hee. Despite its evident success, it couldn't stay away from being talked about by viewers for airing somewhat justified violence.
Mostly, women were affected by the scenes in episode 8. A masked trespasser strikes, kicks, and even chokes Ji Sun Woo, the character played by Kim Hee-ae. The brutal plot illustrated scenes similar to a virtual reality game.
The plot of episode 8 claims to have justified violence in the offender's perspective.
Found in the drama's official website, one fan commented and questioned the motives of the producers and writers regarding the violent scenes. Were the writers trying to sympathize with the trespasser? She said that as a woman, she finds the scene unpleasant.
Another fan wrote that the specific scene is traumatizing and it is hurting actual victims.
JTBC is yet to respond to the criticism.
