You might think that the lives of the rich and famous are all unicorns and ice creams, most especially for the Korean celebs who are bagging awards, topping charts, and landing movie roles left and right. But wait! In case you're not well aware, their lives are not as glitzy as their stage costumes and makeup.
We all know that some of our favorite Korean celebrities have gotten real about their hustles when it comes to their mental health. It is quite a bold move that they can embrace it with open arms. It has helped them raise awareness, change how others see it, and encourage others to accept that mental illness is never one's fault.
Read on to know a few Korean actors/actresses who battled with their mental health issues.
IU
The famous singer and actress never hid her condition. During one of her concerts in 2016, IU openly talked to her fans about how she felt when she was starting to gain popularity in 2014. She expressed that he started to feel a lot of doubts about her abilities and, sad to say, she fell into depression. The superstar shared that's how she got the sleeping disorder (Insomnia), so she was barely doing correctly the things she was supposed to do during the daytime.
Park Hae Jin
Park Hae Jin's mental illness includes depression and social phobia. This was the main reason why he was delayed from fulfilling the mandatory two-year military enlistment. The actor was diagnosed with depression when he was young and received treatments from his attending physicians from June 2003 to November 2005 that was way before he debuted as an actor.
Lee Byung Hun
Actor Lee Byung Hun declared that he suffered from panic disorder and depression after the passing of his father. After clearing the debts of his father, the actor, unfortunately, fell into depression. He once revealed in an interview that he was informed that depression could come after the hardest moments pass. Not only he has depression, but he also developed a panic disorder and had no other choice but to take medication for the said illness. Lee Byung Hun shared that he feels fine when he's acting but finds it hard to attend awards ceremonies.
Suzy
The talented K-pop star and actress Suzy revealed that she developed signs of depression while being busy with her career. She was trying to juggle her workload and the general public's expectations of her. In an interview, she recalled an episode where she unconsciously started to cry while having fun with her friend.
Jang Geun-Suk
Jang Geun Suk was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Due to this he was forced to go for an alternative military service as a public service worker at the Seoul Metropolitan Fire and Disaster Headquarters. His serious condition was categorized as class 4 that made him an exemption for being an duty soldier.
Before enlisting, he penned a letter to his fans and followers. It stated, "Let's say goodbye to each other just for a moment. I want to make good use of two years-I have never taken a rest for 27 years since my debut."
