'Twenty Five, Twenty One' Star Kim Tae Ri in Park Chan Wook's Sapphic Romance Film

The 32-year-old actress made her silver screen debut in the 2016 erotic sapphic thriller "The Handmaiden." She was chosen out of 1,500 auditionees to portray the lead character.

Based on the 2002 English novel "Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters, the movie follows the story of Sook Hee (Kim Tae Ri), a pickpocketer who was hired by conman Fujiwara (Ha Jung Woo) to persuade Japanese heiress Lady Hideko (Kim Min Hee) to marry him and steal her wealth.

The novel is set in the Victorian era. "The Handmaiden" is set against the backdrop of South Korea under Japanese colonial rule.

The psychological thriller film depicted the forbidden romance between Sook Hee and Lady Hideko, and its sexual and explicit scenes between them.

It received a slew of multiple awards, and Kim Tae Ri bagged the Best New Actress award at the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards for her role in her debut film.

In particular, director Park Chan Wook was awarded the Daesang (grand prize) for the movie category at the 53rd Baeksang Arts Awards.

"The Handmaiden" was also nominated for the most coveted and highest prize in the festival, the Palme d'Or. It also boost the nation's morale after it was selected as one the first ever Korean film to be recognized at the British Academy Film Awards. 

"The Handmaiden" served as Kim Tae Ri's springboard to success as she was cast in more projects such as "Little Forest," "Mr. Sunshine," "Entourage" and now, "Twenty Five, Twenty One."

Kim Tae Ri's 'Twenty Five, Twenty One,' 'Alien,' Upcoming Projects

While she is currently starring in the megahit series "Twenty Five, Twenty One" with Nam Joo Hyuk, the actress' upcoming two-part sci-fi film "Alien" is now in post-production.

Directed by Choi Dong Hoon, Kim Tae Ri teams up with Ryu Jun Yeol for the film that is slated to air in the second half of the year.

Moreover, Kim Tae Ri is set to lead the upcoming SBS TV drama "Evil Spirit" (also known as "The Demon") with Kim Eun Hee.

Originally, Kim Tae Ri partnered up with veteran star Gong Yoo. Due to an unexpected turn of events, the actor would be joining the cast of the new drama for an undisclosed reason.
