Increasing Interest of Global Viewers in Non-Romance K-Drama Genre: 'Duty After School,' 'Weak Hero, More
Famous global streaming platform Rakuten Viki elaborated that the K-content consumption for seasonal themes such as thriller, mystery, school violence, fantasy, adventure, and action has been on the rise in the United States, Europe, India, and Oceania.
A head representative from the OTT platform shared that the audience who liked the Korean wave tended to focus on romance genres and star casting, but recently it started to change.
Based on their observation, as various topics are being mentioned in K-dramas, consumption of different genres aside from romance is positively increasing. Curious viewers are also trying out new genres as K-dramas have a wide variety of themes to choose from.
In particular, the non-romance genres "Duty After School," "Weak Hero," and "Taxi Driver 2" have not only succeeded in charting Rakuten Viki Top 10 (which are based on the number of viewers) in major markets such as North America and Europe but are also attracting positive responses from the consumers.

The representative elaborated that the star rating of "Weak Hero" is 9.7 points out of 10, and the newly concluded series "Taxi Driver 2" and "Duty After School" have 9.8 points. It has been said that the season system is also a notable factor.

"Dr. Romantic," "Yumi's Cells," and "Tale of the Nine Tailed" were directly linked to a rise in the rankings as the audience interest in the previous seasons increased together in time for the new seasons to be released.
The medical series "Dr. Romantic 3" is consistently in receiving high viewership ratings since its debut last April 17. The second book of "Tale of the Nine Tailed" also broke its previous viewership rating record, marking a new history.
In addition, Hong Jae Hee, Rakuten's content director said that Korean dramas, which have increased in producing new sequels, have formed their own recognition and fandom bases. He continued that the previous season has been summoned along with the ongoing new season.
