Yoo Ah In sparked excitement after viewers witnessed his return to the small screen through the new K-drama "Goodbye Earth."
After experiencing a setback during its global premiere, Netflix officially released the novel-based K-drama on April 26.
The streaming giant showcased a pre-apocalyptic K-drama that depicts the journey of humans as they struggle to survive the last 200 days before an asteroid hits the Earth.
Alongside Ahn Eun Jin, Jeon Seong Woo, and Kim Yoon Hye, controversial actor Yoo Ah In is also among the lead stars. However, drama officials have decided to reduce his screen time due to the illegal drug issue.
Is 'Goodbye Earth' Worth Watching?
With a total of 12 episodes, the season features how individuals strive to survive the impending end of the world.
Unfortunately, "Goodbye Earth" failed to impress viewers. Over IMDb or an online database where viewers rank a specific TV show or movie, the Netflix K-drama scored 4.4 points out of 10.
Based on the reviews, "Goodbye Earth" was a "complete waste of time" but might turn out to be better if it was made as a movie since the 12-episode series made the story so stretched out that some parts were boring.
As for the review made by a media outlet, the Netflix series didn't keep the viewers hooked throughout the whole season. Among the reasons was "a chaotic and hard-to-follow sequencing."
However, one of the most praised details in "Goodbye Earth" is Yoo Ah In's appearance.
Yoo Ah In Garners Praise for Performance in 'Goodbye Earth'
Filmed in 2022, Yoo Ah In, whose real name is Uhm Hong Sik, portrayed the role of Ha Yoon Sang, a researcher at the Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and also Jin Se Kyung's (Ahn Eun Jin) longtime boyfriend.
Right before the announcement of the massive catastrophe, Yoon Sang left his work in the United States to be with Se Kyung, who is in South Korea, the predicted center of the asteroid's collision with Earth.
As Netflix geared for its highly anticipated release, the "Goodbye Earth" director revealed in an interview that Yoo Ah In's air time would be shortened.
The actor's numerous scenes were trimmed down due to his involvement with the controversy, as well as the ongoing investigation.
"When I was about 3 episodes into the initial editing, the issue of Yoo Ah-in's drug use arose. At first, I thought it was not a complicated situation and would pass, but the problem did not go as planned."
On the other hand, as viewers got to see the global premiere, netizens lauded Yoo Ah In for his exceptional performance despite reducing his airtime.
