Ok Taecyeon opened up about his transition to more mature roles, especially starring in the upcoming BL (boys' love) drama "Soul Mate."
The 2PM member surprised fans after Netflix confirmed that he will headline the Netflix series alongside Japanese actor Hayato Isomura.
In a report cited by Sports Chosun, Ok Taecyeon will take on the character of Korean boxer Hwang Yo Han.
Hayato Isomura, who appeared in the mega-hit series "Alice in Borderland," will portray the character of Ryu Narutaki.
Penned and directed by Hashizume Shunki of "Kanojo to Kareshi no Akarui Mirai," the upcoming J-drama centers around the story of two individuals who were bound by a heartbreaking past.
In the story, viewers will get to witness the decade-long love story between two young men as they travel across major cities like Seoul, Berlin, and Tokyo while healing each other's wounds.
As the upcoming BL J-drama continues to attract the public's attention, Ok Taecyeon revealed his thoughts about the upcoming series.
Ok Taecyeon Says He Accepted 'Soul Mate' Because of One Thing - Here's Why
In a report, the 2PM member dished on his honest opinion and what made him say yes to star in "Soul Mate." According to him, he is looking to work on a different project and discover a different side of himself as an actor.
"I'm extremely delighted to be appearing in 'Soul Mate'' because there were so many types of characters and genres that I haven't tried yet. I'd been wanting to gradually broaden my spectrum and discover new sides of myself."
He added that the timing was just right for him.
In addition to this, other than the whole premise of the drama, Ok Taecyeon said that the character of Yo Han intrigued him the most. He mentioned that while reading the script, he could feel Yo Han's "inner pain and struggles," which was also the turning point for accepting the project.
Like his preparation for his previous dramas, the South Korean actor shared that he is also focusing on his visuals, especially since his character is a boxer.
"To prepare, I lost weight and underwent boxing training, and I've continued to train diligently during filming to portray Johan as best as I can."
On the other hand, "Soul Mate" co-star Hayato Isomura spoke highly of Ok Taecyeon and described him as someone who is "inspiring" to work with. Like the 2PM member, Isomura was also drawn to the story's premise as it highlights the love and pain of two individuals.
"The script moved me with its story of love amidst sadness and pain, and the incredible 10-year story arc crafted by director Hashizume has truly immersed me in the character."
Slated to air exclusively on Netflix, drama officials have yet to announce the target release of the J-drama, but it's possible that "Soul Mate" will join new dramas premiering in 2025.
