In the world of acting, auditions are a typical rite of passage for actors hoping to make it big. Yet, some of South Korea's top stars bypassed this typical process altogether and never auditioned for any roles.
This list includes:
Shim Hye Jin
Actress Shim Hye Jin or Francesca, has been regarded as one of the best in Chungmuro (South Korean film industry).
By 1996, she had already won the Best Actress Award three times that year alone at the Grand Bell Awards—Korea's answer to the Oscars—and both the Blue Dragon Film Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards.
Impressively, Shim did so without having to audition for a single part. She was first noticed as a Coca-Cola model and found herself leading in In the Name of Memories when actress Kim Ji-mi picked her up while she was working in advertising.
Wonhee Lim
The same thing happened to actor Wonhee Lim. He entered luxuriously without audition and is known for his traits of a 'salty character.
Lim was discovered by film director Jang Jin while working in musical theater, making the transition to films almost immediately with roles as a detective at Amazing Men, in Spy Lee Cheol-jin, and Dachimawa Lee.
In a recent variety show he mentioned, 'I had an extravagant debut doing plays without an audition. Auditions are still new to me."
Lim Ye Jin
Actress Lim Ye Jin took another route to the top. She started her career as a model when her uncle, who was in a magazine company, secured her cover shoot rates while she was still studying in middle school.
The exposure opened up tons of offers for Lim, who told the publication, "I debuted as a movie actress without auditioning once or competing with anyone." She gained a reputation as a rising youth star by succeeding in teen films.
These actors represent a rare path in the system of entertainment, where talent and opportunity do not always create an instantaneous correlation but rather bounce off each other crazily before straightening out.
