At a press conference on November 13, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Netflix's successful series "Squid Game," addressed the controversy surrounding the upcoming second season, including the negative reaction to the casting of the actor Choi Seung Hyun, more popularly known as TOP.
With Season 2 on the way, all eyes are on the upcoming film following the success of its first season. The new season will continue the storyline of the fierce rivalry between Ki-hoon (Lee Jung-jae) and Frontman (Lee Byung-hun).
Choi's casting has proven to be highly contentious. He had not expected to spark controversy over Choi's role, Hwang admitted. Speaking of the time passed since Choi last faced legal issues, he said, "I thought it would be okay because it's the old days."
Hwang noted that he believes in second chances for people, saying that, 'in his experience,' many actors have been able to reinvigorate their careers after past controversies.
"I was very surprised by how many people voiced their concern," Hwang said. "I was like, 'okay my thoughts are probably off, and that's sort of narrow-minded. He explained that he conducted thorough auditions and was impressed by Choi's dedication and talent.

Hwang also answered a question about the casting process for season 2, specifically about actors being grouped based on the same agency, such as BH Entertainment, which represents Park Hae-soo and Lee Jin-Wook.
He categorically dismissed any suggestion of favoritism, saying, "I think that no one accepts that as much as I do. That's my most important principle and philosophy."
Moving forward, Hwang confirmed that season 3 will be the end of the "Squid Game" story. It was something he wanted but continued to do, but obviously did not want to drag out. But he also didn't completely close the door on future spinoffs.
Season 2 of the much-talked-about series "Squid Game" will be released worldwide on Netflix on December 26.
