Choi Daniel Opens Up About His Heartbreaking Childhood on YouTube Show

Choi Daniel recently discussed his challenging upbringing during an episode of his YouTube show, ChoiDa Cheese.

He talked about the areas where he faced difficulties and struggled personally throughout his life, highlighting that he did not grow up feeling entitled.

In the latest episode of the show featuring Jeon So Min as a guest, Choi spoke about his family, revealing that he lost his mother at the age of four.

"My mother passed away when I was four. That has left a big hole in my family," he said, "I am six years younger than my big brother."

After the incident, Choi said, his father was busy trying to make a living for the family.

"We needed the bare minimum, at the very least. He was very, very busy," he said.

The actor also shared how he struggled as a young boy when he had to go to school without proper funds to purchase uniforms.

"Ivy Club was a huge brand back in the day. I couldn't afford that brand but went to a nearby school shop to get one," Choi said. He mentioned being in the wearing of second-hand clothing from school, referring to his upbringing.

Relating a story of a friend who once spilled something on his uniform, he spoke from a place of deep respect for the garments we display our identity in.

"I took such pride in watching it," he said.

When he turned 20 years old, he had to start working and self-supporting as a high schooler.

Nearly 20 years in, it hasn't been without its struggles, though. He is now starring alongside Jeon So Min in the KBS K-Drama "Sorry Not Sorry."

When read between the lines, Choi reveals his own faults and failures that many will recognize from their own lives — the way you can bounce through life with your best foot forward but knowing that you can always do better, an incredible message of perseverance and grit.
