Wang, whose credits include a string of Chinese films, went missing in Bangkok on Jan. 3, where he had been brought for a shoot by a Thai production team.

They were contacted later that day in Mae Sot, a city on Thailand's border with Myanmar that has attracted people looking for work but where many are overcharged or subjected to criminal activities.

The actor went missing after his girlfriend publicly pleaded on social media.

She described how Wang had been escorted past Thai immigration by someone who portrayed himself as part of a film crew and later taken to Mae Sot.

Following the public outrage, Thai police started an investigation.

On Jan. 6, they found Wang and confirmed that he has become a victim of human trafficking and fraud syndicates.

Wang was lured into the group and then forced to cross into Myanmar, authorities said.

Wang described being brought to a facility where armed but not uniformed personnel were held at a distance from him, and it was here that he suffered a similar fate to other victims of telephone scams.

"I can't sleep. I can't eat. And I didn't even have the time to pee," he said as quoted by South China Morning Post, noting he was made to practice writing under immense pressure for several days.

According to him, at least 50 other people trapped at the facility were from different countries.

Wang's encounter has shined a light on the threat of these types of scam works, causing others to step forward with like tales of their family members.

Such incidents rekindled local fears of human trafficking and fraud — and called for the authorities to do more to combat the syndicates.
