The heart-throb bachelor who thrilled audiences with his rags-to-riches journey on Netflix K-drama Single's Inferno, Dex, whose real name is Kim Jin Young, endured a lot of struggles even before he became famous.
Dex started as a cast member on Single's Inferno 2 before becoming a host for future seasons.
A path paved with personal issues, struggles, and overcoming adversities; for each song, his compelling and strong character takes center stage.
"UDT training was my happiest moment. The most challenging time was after I left UDU," Dex said while speaking to his friend and "Physical: 100" competitor Agent H in an interview. "My life was in despair back then."
Dex shared he struggled financially after his service. He had gone to Seoul to be a swim coach, but he found out it was located in the countryside near the frontlines. He had settled in a somewhat tricky spot and was struggling to make ends meet.
"I was broke. I barely had money for a deposit. I can't pay any deposit or rent," he said.
"But there's a boiler room at every facility. There was an underground room where the pool was maintained. That room had a bit of space in the corner. I slept there every day," he continued.

Through this dark time, Dex drank to deal with what had happened to him.
"The machines were too loud. I would drink 2 bottles of liquor, get totally smashed, and then sleep. Just work the next day, and drink again, I actually drank 2 bottles a day. Every day. That was the most difficult — I think that was the lowest point in my life. I was lost."
Despite all this, Dex held off on contacting his parents for support, and he had a small social circle at that time.
He ultimately rejoined the military, where he encountered strict training and brutal commanders.
His perseverance paid off when he participated in Single's Inferno.
With newfound fame comes a multitude of opportunities, but that's a whole different story for Dex, who, despite everything, continues to peddle the tale of his resilience and determination for others to replicate.
