The funny wedding scene that begins the comedy "Emergency Couple," starring Choi Jin Hyuk and Song Ji Hyo, is a good reason to re-visit the subject of k-drama weddings.
The comedy opens with a shot of the bride and groom being pursued by some men and running into a church service that's in full swing.
The minister seems a little upset that his sermon has been interrupted but decides to marry them anyway. The impulsive wedding starts a short-lived marriage and the very complicated working relationship that develops the plotline of this drama.
It's one of many quirky k-drama weddings, which play with the fantasy of the perfect ceremony.
One quirky favorite is the wedding in "Personal Taste." Son Ye Jin is invited but somehow managed to miss the part of the invitation where it said her so-called best friend was marrying the guy she just broke up with a few days before. When she realizes how they betrayed her she just walks down the aisle after them and wants to know what's going on. Lee Min Ho is in the audience watching her make a fool of herself.
In "Shark" Son Ye Jin has another unfortunate wedding. She is happily marrying her childhood friend when her first love, a man everyone believes is dead, shows up and talks to her. Hopefully the actress will have better luck with her next k-drama wedding.
When it comes to weddings with pomp and ceremony, "Princess Hours" probably wins. Yoon Eun Hye is an ordinary girl who marries the imaginary Crown Prince played by Joo Ji Hoon. Their wedding rivets the attention of the entire nation, much as the world watched Princess Diana marry Prince Charles.
Jang Geun Suk plays a role in two of the funniest k-drama wedding scenes. Park Shin Hye imagines them as a couple at the altar in "You're Beautiful" and rightly imagines they would probably fight all the time. Then in "Mary Stayed Out All Night," Moon Geun Young loves Jang Geun Suk and only agrees to marry Kim Jae Wook instead so she can publicly divorce him and return to JGS. Moon Geun Young actually has three ceremonies in that drama, a fantasy one in the opening credits, a fake one with JGS and the one that ends in divorce with Kim Jae Wook. That drama wins the award for the most wedding scenes.
One of the simplest and yet also saddest wedding scenes took place in "Bridal Mask" when the wedding of Joo Won and was interrupted by a deadly shooting. A beautiful ceremony in a field of flowers ends tragically and helps determine the drama's inevitable end.
