Following his dominant win over Jimi Manuwa, Alexander Gustafsson earns another title shot in the UFC's light-heavyweight division. Gustafsson will fight the winner of Jones vs Teixeira as confirmed by UFC President Dana White.
"If Jones wins, we have a nasty rematch," Dana White said at the post-fight press conference. "If he doesn't, then it's [Gustafsson] and Glover Teixeira."
There was a lot at stake in the main event of UFC Fight Night 37 between Alexander Gustafsson and Jimi Manuwa. Gustafsson is seeking a rematch with Jon Jones for the title after a close fight between the two ended with the controversial loss of Gustafsson and Manuwa trying to make a statement with his first fight against a top 10 fighter.
Gustafsson got Manuwa down early in the first round, where he looked to lock up a kimura. After a few failed attempts, Manuwa managed to get to his feet. Manuwa landed a good body punch towards the end of the round.
In the second round Manuwa got a bit more busy. He landed more leg kicks and punches, but it was Gustafsson who landed a knee that hurt Manuwa. Gustafsson then landed several uppercuts while Manuwa was against the cage. Manuwa fell to the mat, where Gustafsson landed a few hammer fists that forced the referee to stop the fight.
Gustafsson made it clear in his post-fight interview who he wanted next by calling out champion Jon Jones and telling him that he wants his rematch.
Gustafsson faced Jon Jones in a previous title fight last year at UFC 165. He lost the fight via decision, but after five-hard-rounds many believe it was the Swede that deserved victory.
