Meryl Streep, the Oscar winning actress, is set to star as a hard-rocking mama in the film "Rick And the Flash" according to Deadline. TriStar Productions is closing a deal to finance and distribute the movie. Several studios are in the mix, including Universal, Fox and The Weinstein Company. The film has been a hot commodity amongst studios as Streep is already attached to the film and she will be playing a completely different role than she has before. It is said that Streep has already started preparing for her role. The screenplay will be written by Diablo Cody ("Juno," "Young Adult") and will be directed by Jonathan Demme (That Thing You Do), and produced by Marc Platt and Mason Novick.

"Ricki And the Flash" is about a woman who loves rock and roll music. SHe chased her rock and roll dreams at the price of her family, but gets a last chance to get it right by reconciling with her estranged daughter.

Director Demme, who has directed documentaries with Neil Young, encountered iconic guitarist and singer while with Streep. Young apparently gave Streep some pointers. Meryl Streep is not entirely new to the concept of musical movies either. She has already demonstrated her ability to sing in the film "Mamma Mia!? This is new territory for an actress who has done most everything, racking up an impressive 18 Oscar nominations in her 35 year long career (she holds a record). Her character belts out hard rock at night and is a grocery store checkout lady by day. Shooting begins this fall.

Demme has directed musical films before, including "That Thing You Do;" Platt is currently producing the film version of Into The Woods and the Broadway hit Wicked. Novick has produced Diablo Cody's earlier films Juno, Young Adult and Bad Words.
