Jared Leto, who recently won an Oscar for his role in "Dallas Buyer's Club" has a new movie coming out! The 42-year-old actor-musician's music documentary "Artifact" will make its television premiere on VH1 and Palladia on Saturday, April 26 at 11pm. The film will also air on MTV later this summer and will also be available on-demand in the VH1 app as well as on iTunes. "Artifact" follows Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars in a legal dispute with their label while struggling to produce their album "This Is War." It reveals the harsh realities of the modern music business as they overcame a legal dispute with their label; in 2008, 30 Seconds to Mars was sued for $30 million by their parent label Virgin/EMI. They were sued for breach of contract as the band attempted to exit its agreement with Virgin over a royalties dispute.
"I hope that artists and audiences watch this film and get a greater understanding of how things work in the music industry, because understanding is the beginning of change," Leto said to Variety. "Inevitably, we're all moving toward what I hope is a more transparent system." The film was produced by Leto and Emma Ludbrook.
"Artifact" has already won several awards. It took home the 2012 Toronto Festival's People's Choice documentary award and the Audience Award at the 22nd Gotham Independent Film Awards. It is also the winner of Blackberry's People's Choice Documentary Award at TIFF 2012. The Toronto Film Festival reviewed the film as "Telling harsh truths about the modern music business, Artifact gives intimate access to singer/actor Jared Leto and his band Thirty Seconds to Mars as they battle their label in a brutal lawsuit and record their album This Is War. The film is a true artifact of our times, as its subjects struggle with big questions over art, money and integrity."
