Cortana windows phone YouTube reveals a 'live demo of the new windows phone start screen and Cortana and just what a digital assistant is. Of course, this takes into account that Apple Inc. came out with Siri, the virtual assistant for the iPad, iPhone product line. Suffice it to say, that Siri is to Apple as Cortana is to Microsoft, although the Redmond firm does say it is the first such digital assistant:

The personal smartphone is now even more personal. The start screen is all about user individuality. The windows phone comes to life with live tiles.
The world's first digital assistant coming to Windows Phone 8.1. Powered by Bing, the Windows assistant was inspired by a character from the video game halo....Cortana.
Cortana was developed after chatting with real world assistants to figure out what an assistant is really like or how they work.
One idea surrounding the digital assistant is the notebook, tracking all the interests that I am involved in. Cortana also stores details about you in her notebook, which can also be viewed and edited by the user. And this can be done whenever you want.
Cortana's notebook shows the user's interests, some of which is automatically registered such as location and weather. Other interests can be added manually by myself. Cortana also assists in maintaining a 'do not disturb' mode for the user.
'Quiet hours' are designed for Cortana to handle notifications and calls without the user's intervention. It is a given that the digital assistant is familiar with the most significant people who might call by their name. When they call, Cortana can also break through quiet hours to through to the user.
Cortana works with a lot of rich information about the Windows phone user. This helps the digital assistant to be proactive and make a day's schedule more interesting than an average day.
How does she do this?
She knows when I drive home from work to home and vice versa and can help me to fight traffic. She can track calendars, track flights, meetings and much much more. Here’s a sample of what Cortana might respond to Windows Phone user:
"Hi there. I'm Cortana. I can help make life a bit easier for you." These are the first words of Microsoft's still unannounced virtual assistant codenamed "Cortana," according to a new video leaked by UnleashThePhones.com. If it's true, this is the best look we've had about the rumored Windows Phone 8.1 service so far. The video begins by showing Cortana as a dedicated Live Tile, and then takes us through the setup process. You'll be prompted to login with your Microsoft Account, which is required to enjoy all of the service's features; according to the permissions page, Cortana will have access to sources like your location data, voice input, contacts, calendar, search history, emails and texts, browser history and more.
