Is there really a Transformers and Evangelion crossover? Japanese toy company Tomy Takara announced a new toyline, featuring the robot characters of Transformers and the hit anime mecha series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you like giant robots and anime, then you're not going to miss this.

The picture above is not photo shopped, but rather Tomy Takara's take on the whole Transformers/Evangelion crossover, as we can see the Autobot leader Optimus Prime sporting a color scheme similar to the Evangelion Unit 01that Shinji Ikari pilots in the anime series. The photo was revealed by several internet sources, and one person by the user name Yozakan_1 tweeted about it. So far this is the only photo ever shown to the public, and we might see more very soon.

The photo also indicated a background story as translated by Anime News Network:

"The Angels are invading. Breaking a long silence, the mysterious life-forms known as the Angels suddenly appear. The weapons the UN forces gather together in retaliation can't even scratch them. In the end, they turn to the secret agency, NERV, to manage the anti-Angel strategy.

"With Neo-Tokyo 3 in their sights, the Angels slowly advance upon the city...but suddenly a spaceship comes hurtling down from the sky above the Angels: the Autobot Sky Lynx! Out of the ship emerges warriors of the far-off planet Cybertron. They've come to investigate after noticing an unusual energy reading."

"We can't let a disaster like the Second Impact occur on this planet."
"What?! What are these monsters?!"

Optimus Prime sets his sights on an enemy much bigger than himself."

It was last week that Tomy Takara opened a 30th anniversary site for the Transformers and Japanese TV network, "Nippon Television Network" will hold the Transformers Expo in August this year.

So what do you think of the Transformers and Evangelion crossover?
