Mike Garza added an injury to his list of unfortunate events in his first season with the Brewers, who are going through their own struggles after ending their road trip in less-than-ideal fashion.
Garza and the Brewers hope the confines of Miller Park can help get them back on track as the club begins a nine-game homestand Monday night against the Diamondbacks.
The Brewers (21-11) dropped four of five to finish a seven-game road swing after winning nine of 11 overall prior to that stretch. They came apart in the late innings Sunday, allowing the tying homer in the eighth before giving up the winning run in the 10th of a 4-3 loss to Cincinnati.
"This would've been an important game to win," manager Ron Roenicke said. "If you lose, you lose the road trip. If you win, you win the road trip. You wouldn't think one game could do that, but it does."
Garza (1-3, 5.00 ERA), who signed a four-year, $50 million deal in the offseason, had to leave Wednesday's start in the fourth inning due to a bruised right thumb after giving up five runs and walking four in a 9-3 loss to St. Louis.
It marked another difficult start for the right-hander, who allowed at least four runs for the fourth time in six outings.
"It's been a consistent battle for me so far this year," Garza said. "I don't know if it's me fighting myself or me trying to do too much or what it is, but it needs to stop. I'm going to carry my weight on this team and do my part. Right now, I'm not."
Roenicke told the team's official website on Friday that Garza will be OK to start this contest despite the injury.
"The black and blue's almost gone and the swelling's gone," Roenicke said. "He threw really well. I don't think that's going to be an issue."
Garza has been solid against the Diamondbacks, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA as slugger Paul Goldschmidt has gone 0 for 6 with three strikeouts against him.
Goldschmidt, though, is batting .440 during a six-game hitting streak after connecting for a solo homer in Sunday's 4-3 loss to San Diego that snapped a three-game winning streak for Arizona (11-23).
