Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka made a splash at the 2014 Met Gala in matching crop top tuxes with ankle-length tails. Neil and David are both wearing Thom Browne tuxedos.

Oh, but that's not even the most shocking part. The former How I Met Your Mother star flaunted a face full of dramatic makeup-including eyeliner, contoured bronzer and heavy foundation. Perhaps, it was a nod to his current Broadway character, Hedwig, which he just scored a Tony nomination for.

Not to be outdone, David opted for a mix of prints made up of a checkered coat with striped pants. Neil's suit was simple black, but again that was the only traditional aspect of the look.

After spending years living in the Los Angeles area - where the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" was filmed - Neil Patrick Harris recently made the move to New York with his partner, David Burtka, and twin toddlers, Gideon and Harper.

Harris is now starring on Broadway in the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" and, while he adjusts to playing a transsexual, down-on-her-luck East German rocker on stage, he said his family is having fun adjusting to their new hometown.

"The parks are amazing. The children's museums are amazing," Harris, 40, said on "Good Morning America." "A carousel will be on the water in Brooklyn and you get to just go there and experience it, so I'm loving the experiential elements of just living the life here."

"We were so excited for this chapter to begin," he said of the cross-country move. "The kids start into preschool soon and we're renovating a brownstone that we bought that we're really looking forward to living in."

Harris' transformation into Hedwig, a transgender woman from East Berlin after a botched sex change, requires nearly two hours of hair and makeup before each show.

The actor's three-year-old twins have seen their dad getting ready to take the stage and, "have a lot of questions."

"Gideon and Harper did come to the dressing room and see me getting made up," Harris said. "They think it's hilarious. Harper loves the glitter. They both like the nail polish so they think all of that is very funny."

As for the twins' questions, Harris said he and Burtka feel it's important for Gideon and Harper to know what their fathers do. Burtka is also an actor who has had roles in "The West Wing" and "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas," according to IMDB.

"We've been dressing up with them for a long time, Halloween costumes and things," Harris said. "I think it's important they know what we do as opposed to just, 'Papa's going to work and we don't talk about that.'"

"I'm really proud," Harris said of "Hedwig," currently in previews at the Belasco Theater.

While there is a lot to love about New York City, Harris does have one complaint after moving from sunny California.

"The weather blows sometimes," he said. "What's with the cold?"

"I'm glad that it's suddenly starting to be Spring."
