Floyd Mayweather Sr. spoke after his son's fight against Marcos "El Chino" Maidana on May 3rd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas where the elder Mayweather said that a rematch between the two fighters us possible but he doesn't like seeing Floyd Jr. getting hit.
"Money" won the fight but was only able to escape a razor-thin majority decision as he improves to a spotless 46-0 record. Saturday night's match was quite unusual for a Floyd Mayweather Sr.'s son's fight that boxing fans are accustomed to.
Floyd Jr.'s bout against Marcos Maidana showed "El Chino" was able to press the action, corner "Money" against the ropes, and inflict damage from close range.
It was one of the rare times when Floyd Mayweather Sr.'s son was put in jeopardy since his fight with Miguel Cotto in 2012.
Floyd Mayweather Sr., however, still believes that his son put on a good performance against "El Chino." He even commended Floyd Jr.'s ability to play the opponent's game plan - to fight the other guy's fight.
On the other hand, Floyd Sr. also believes that there were aspects of the fight wherein his son could have done a lot better.
"He didn't need to be on the ropes all the time," the elder Mayweather told The Boxing Channel. "That's mainly one of the things that I rejected. You could stay off the ropes by just pivoting."
Right after the fight, talks about a possible rematch have immediately surfaced. Floyd Jr., was open to the idea, saying, "He does not duck anyone."
But Floyd Mayweather Sr. had mixed emotions about it. He claimed a rematch should happen as long as both fighters want it yet he is aware that "Father Time" is slowly catching up with his son, and this has been a concern for him.
"I tell you this, if you wanna be honest with me, sometimes we don't know ourselves," Mayweather Sr. added. "We get to an age and we don't realize it. After seeing the fight today, Floyd showed that he was a strong individual, but I don't like him getting hit."
