The Last of Us: Remastered PS4 Release Date Moved; Naughty Dog Developers: ‘Porting Was Hell’; Straightforward Version, But With Improvements And Tweaks

With The Last of Us: Remastered PS4 release date moved to August 7 this year, preorders were suspended, to the dismay of expectant gamers.

Retailers earlier notified gamers that the June 13 release is postponed, and that the title would be available by August. Developer Naughty Dog is having trouble with the technical requirements of the port.

The Last of Us: Remastered is practically an exact port-over of the game, from the PS3 to the PS4. Developers resisted the temptation to maximize the (in-game) specs to 1080p resolution, and 60fps running rate.

The cinematics for the cut scenes were bumped to 1080p and 60fps, though, and character rendering was upgraded. The addition of three DLC Packs significantly increased the game's file size, more than a Blu-ray disc can accommodate.

Naughty Dog has somewhat confirmed The Last of Us: Remastered PS4 release date on August holds, but maintains the end of 2014 is the placeholder period. The long wait should be justified by comparisons of the PS4-PS3 versions, with graphical quality that contrasts Blu-ray and DVD.

Naughty Dog's creator Neil Druckman asserts the development team went through hell with the port (polygon.com). "We expected it to be hell, and it was hell... I wish we had a button that was like 'Turn On PS4 Mode', but no."

Druckman says the PS3 version of The Last of Us was perfectly optimized for the hardware. Developers practically had to start from scratch with the port. The original and remastered versions of the game were then compared to verify the improvements.

The Last of Us: Remastered PS4 release date should satisfy gamers' expectation, but Druckman maintains the game is a straightforward conversion. They're considering tweaks on the gameplay, though, such as the option to switch functions for the shoulder triggers on the PS4 controller, as well as integrating the touchpad (examiner.com).

Naughty Dog is reportedly working on two titles ("brand-new experiences") aside from The Last of Us. Uncharted 4 is in development and expected to be showcased at June's E3 event (gamespot.com).
