Floyd Mayweather's next fight has been made official when "Money" released a statement through Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe that the fight will take place on September 13 but there is no opponent named yet.
The current pound-for-pound king has only released a date and while the venue for Floyd Mayweather's next fight has not yet been specified, his camp is looking at Las Vegas where "Money" is currently residing, specifically the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
"Floyd will go on Sept. 13 and we looking at who he's going to fight and where he is going to fight," Ellerbe told ESPN.com. "Obviously, Las Vegas is his home and the MGM Grand is always the leading candidate but we will take a look at our other options."
Floyd Mayweather's next fight will be fight number four out of his lucrative six-fight deal with Showtime, which reportedly is around $200 million. The undefeated boxing superstar (46-0, with 26 knockouts) is coming off a controversial majority decision victory over Marcos Maidana on May 3rd.
As for "Money's" next opponent, no one specific has been named yet, but Ellerbe says that they will have a name out soon.
"We're looking at opponents now," Ellerbe said. "In the next two weeks we'll have that part figured out."
Ellerbe did, however drop hints on some names that they have in mind. Among them are the names of Marcos Maidana and Amir Khan.
People have been clamoring for a rematch against Marcos Maidana, and obligingly, "Money's" camp sees "El Chino" as a possible candidate for Floyd Mayweather's next fight, albeit their perception of him as a "dirty fighter."
"He's definitely in the mix," Ellerbe continued. "He's a very dirty fighter. He used a lot of dirty tactics, but Floyd handled him easily and he gave the fans a great fight."
"But there's a long list of opponents. Everybody wants to be in the Floyd Mayweather sweepstakes. Several guys have made it clear they want to be next," he added.
Amir Khan, who has been asking for a fight against Floyd Mayweather for months, now, is also being considered.
"If Amir Khan wants to flight Floyd Mayweather, we're going to fight on Sept. 13," Ellerbe answered.
