New York - - The Los Angeles Dodgers were hoping to get a decent performance tonight from their talented left-handed pitcher, Hyun-Jin Ryu, the South Korean youngster. However, Ryu, who had been on the disabled list for nearly a month with left shoulder inflammation surpassed all expectations. Ryu pitched a masterful game against the New York Mets until tiring in the sixth inning in leading the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Mets at Citi Field in New York City.
Ryu collected his fourth victory of the season, against just two losses.
The South Korean star, who finished his rookie 2013 season with a sterling 14-8 record, had gotten off to a fast start to the 2014 season. In his first seven outings this year, Ryu, with an earned run average of 3.00, had incredibly not allowed a run to be scored on him in any road game, having pitched 28.0 consecutive scoreless innings in opposing team stadiums. That record was snapped tonight at 33.0 consecutive innings when the Mets finally broke through with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Ryu began to tire.
But, until that sixth inning, Ryu pitched as if he had not missed any time recuperating from his injury.
"I was faithful to my rehab and what the trainers told me. I felt good. I felt ready, mentally," Ryu said through a translator. "I'm glad to be back and eager to get the team going in a winning direction."
Ryu completed six innings tonight, allowing nine hits (four of which took place in the sixth) while striking out nine Mets batters. He was dominant for the first five innings but his three and half week layoff from baseball took its toll on him in the sixth when the Mets mounted a mini-comeback.
Dodger manager, Don Mattingly was impressed with his performance.
"Ryu threw the ball very well tonight," said the Dodgers' manager. "We were hoping to get five or six innings from him tonight but didn't know if he was conditioned well enough to go that far. His control was outstanding."
Ryu was supported by three home runs by his teammates. Adrian Gonzalez homered for the third straight game, then Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back shots to account for the Dodgers runs.
