Rockstar Lawsuit GTA V: ‘Mob Wives’ Star Wants A $40-Million Chunk Off The Game’s Profits! Developers Want The Case Dropped As Frivolous

Updates to the Rockstar lawsuit GTA V: the developer isn't giving plaintiff Karen Gravano a dollar for her claim, much less $40 million. Gravano was previously involved in the mob and is currently a mainstay at reality show "Mob Wives."

Gravano claimed that one of the characters in Rockstar Games' GTA V is based on her, including her circumstances and likeness. In the video game, one of the protagonist's missions is to rescue Antonia Bottino from a hit; Bottino's father snitched on the mob, allegedly mirroring Gravano's real-life story.

Gravano's lawsuit claims the developers are using her likeness without her consent. The Rockstar lawsuit GTA V also asserts that she's consequently, "irreparably damaged in a manner and to an extent not compensable by money damages."

Damages to the tune of $40 million are demanded, but Rockstar Games maintains that "life stories" like Gravano's aren't protected by law. Companies cannot be sued for works of fiction bearing similarities to personalities and events, experiences.

Rockstar pointed out that the supposed similarities between Gravano and the character Bottino is coincidental, and that the latter's botched hit of being buried alive wasn't part of Gravano's life story.

The Rockstar lawsuit GTA V also claims that the character bears close resemblance to the complainant, a "thinner version of Gravano." Rockstar responds by discrediting caricatures and parodies as grounds for the claim.

Rockstar Games wants the lawsuit "dismissed in its entirety with prejudice." Reparative sanctions, costs, and fees should also be awarded as compensation.

There's a precedent to the current Rockstar lawsuit GTA V; actress Lindsay Lohan previously considering filing a claim for damages, as the character Poppy Mitchell was allegedly based on her. The lawsuit was never filed, due to the weakness of the case and due to precedent verdicts. Characters based on real-life people are usually satires, and lawsuits against such normally don't bear fruit (cinemablend.com).
