Mojang has confirmed the Minecraft PS4 edition is in development, and takes the good news further by offering the game for the PlayStation Vita as well. Developers have also optimized the port so players can use previous game saves on new consoles (mojang.com).
Mojang previously announced it is porting an Xbox One version of the game, release date to be confirmed. The announcement of a PS4 and PlayStation Vita port comes with perks as well.
Owners of the PlayStation copy of the game can avail of the port with a $5 upgrade, available as downloadable content at PlayStation's online gaming portal. The same upgrade was previously announced for Xbox 360 owners who want to play the Xbox One port.
Aside from the Minecraft PS4 edition, the PS Vita version is also available as DLC starting August. Sony offers the copy free to download, for subscribers who've already bought the PS3 version of the title (from the PlayStation Network).
Game saves from the PlayStation 3 are compatible with the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita ports. PS4 saves aren't recognized in PS3, though, due to technical and hardware issues. All of the purchased DLC for the PS3 will work on PS Vita as well.
In related news, Microsoft has also announced an August release date for Minecraft in Xbox One. Copies are priced $20 apiece, available for upgrade at $5. The slash-price deal runs until August 2015.
Specific release dates are yet to be confirmed for the Minecraft PS4 edition and Xbox One port. Copies were originally sold as digital downloads, and the Xbox 360 followed up with a disc-based release.
Mojang notes that most of the features saved from previous-gen copies of the game are carried through on the Minecraft PS4 edition and the Xbox One, except for a few downloadable skins and texture packs (gamespot.com).
The Minecraft port rolls out August, through the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Now.
