First Lady Michelle Obama's fashion statement always includes designer clothes and signature brands, making her ensemble in every event a spectacle. The First Lady's press secretary Joanna Rosholm nnow clarifies the glaring question on who pays for her clothes.
Rosholm explained that the Michelle Obama's fashion is out of the First Lady's own pocket. In some cases where she has to attend public events or those with historic significance, she usually wears clothes that are given as gifts by the designers.
The said gifts are accepted by the U.S government and eventually turned over to the National Archives for storage.
"That saves Mrs. Obama considerable money, although the White House refused to say how often the first lady wears donated clothes and the National Archives declined to say how many such items it has in storage," The Journal report reads.
The press secretary also explained that Mrs. Obama does not borrow any clothing.
The Journal stated that Michelle Obama's fashion grabbed attention in the opening of a new costume gallery in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art as the First Lady wore a stunning forest-green Naeem Khan dress. She was also seen wearing an elegant Marchessa gown during the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
Mrs. Obama also wowed attendees at a Mother's Day tea for military women when she wore a floral shirtdress.
It can be noted that two of her inaugural gowns were donated were by Jason Wu, a designer who became popular after Mrs. Obama wore his creations.
In her remarks regarding the gown, the First Lady said that "The dress I donated today, made by Jason Wu, is a masterpiece."
The Huffington Post also noted two other gowns from designers that were donated. Known designers Carolina Herrera and Naeem Khan both donated gowns for a state dinner with French President Francois Hollande and in the 2012 governor's ball respectively.
Aside from donated clothes, the First Lady also eyes discounts when buying her own stuff to cut costs.
Meredith Koop, Mrs. Obama's personal assistant, dished out to Washington Post few years ago about Michelle Obama's fashion. Koop said she helps the First Lady in arranging purchases and scouting for the best offered price.
