Switzerland reigns over Ecuador after a 2 - 1 victory on Estadio Nacional de Brasilia in Group E's match. The match was the first-ever international meeting between the two teams.
Ecuador gains an early lead after Enner Valencia attacks with a header during the 22nd - minute mark, leaving Switzerland shocked as they dominated during the first half of the match. The Swiss were constantly missing passes and were unable to overcome Ecuador's offensive moves.
However, Behrami brought the spirits back into the game as he ties the score for the team during the 48th - minute mark.
Ottmar Hitzfield of Switzerland commends Behrami's performance in a report in The Guardian, saying: "Behrami did really well. He was fouled and went to the ground but saw there was an opportunity for a counter-strike and took it. It is very important to have that intuition. We knew Ecuador were still in offensive mode and we took full advantage."
The highlight of the match was made by Haris Seferovic, as he initiates a last-minute strike against Ecuador, securing Switzerland's victory just right in the 93rd - minute mark.
"We were naive and that cost us the game," Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rieda told CBC Sports. "[The loss] is more our fault. We were not beaten by our opponent."
Switzerland will be pitted against France, who emerged victorious against Ecuador on an easy 3 - 0 victory at Salvador. The Swiss will have to match up against the French's higher goal difference which is currently setting them on the top of Group E.
