Anderson Silva's comeback in the UFC is looking better after US doctors gave him the green light to do sparring sessions in training once again.
Although the exact schedule for Anderson Silva's comeback and full recovery have not been specified, "The Spider" will finally get to be back in his normal training regimens after suffering a vicious leg injury during his fight against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in December 2013.
Dr. Marcio Tannure, his doctor in Brazil, confirmed the news in his interview with MMA Fighting.
"He was already cleared by his doctors in the United States, but he likes to hear my opinion because I was with him in every step of his recovery, including the surgery," Dr. Tannure explained. "There's no exact recovery timetable for this type of injury."
"It could take three months or one year, but he had a good recovery and we're happy," he added. "It's going as we expected."
Anderson Silva's injury is considered as one of the worst and most violent injuries in recent mixed martial arts history. After throwing a leg kick using his left leg, opponent Chris Weidman effectively checked it using his right knee.
The impact of "The Spider's" shinbone on Chris Weidman's knee caused it to snap and break instantly. Six months into therapy and rehabilitation, Dr. Tannure revealed that the former middleweight champion still feels "unsafe" whenever he throws leg kicks using the said leg.
Teammate and close friend Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante recently spoke to FOX Sports saying that Anderson Silva's comeback mainly relies on having the proper mindset.
"What's always made him a great fighter, I think, is his mindset," Feijao said. "The way that he looks at fighting. That can't change."
Dr. Tannure agreed to "Feijao's" statement, but he took on a more uncertain stance regarding a successful Anderson Silva comeback.
"It would be really premature to say something now, he hasn't even sparred yet," Dr. Tannure added. "His recovery was great, but now we have to work on his mind and get rid of the mental block.
"It could take a while, maybe not," he continued. "It would be really hard to say right now he can or can't fight this year. It's not the moment, and he's the one that is going to feel it."
