Brazil World Cup 2014 Schedule: Group Fixtures, South Korea Vs. Belgium 0-1:
Belgium finish top of Group H in the Brazil World Cup 2014 after skipper Jan Vertonghen's goal gives them a 1-0 win over South Korea in their final Group H match.
Belgium's Steven Defour's red card for reckless tackle stumping on South Korean player Kim Shin-wook looked like Belgium's 10 men would have to struggle but Vertonghen scored Belgium's single goal to put the team ahead by three wins after three matches.
According to the turn of events in the Round of 16 starting on June 28 Saturday, Belgium is slated to advance to Group 2 and will face the U.S. team. South Korea, who didn't do very much during the FIFA World Cup 2014 will catch a plane home.
Despite the 10-man team, Belgium played well to move ahead to the top of their Group H.
From South Korea's perspective, they were in a 'must-win' predicament against Belgium. Son Heung-Min was desperate for scoring ops and he was unfortunate to have his cross hit the front of the crossbar. Belgium played a swift offensive game with tight defending. The Vertonghen goal was an absolute relief for the Red Devil's who were a man down.
Despite Belgium's valiant wins, the side was under criticism in the World Cup 2014 for not putting everything they've got into their game. Perhaps Belgium didn't accumulate goals like Germany but they staved off a loss in 13 games during Group H fixtures in the Brazil World Cup 2014. What's more? They let in just one goal in three games, an impressive feat for the Belgium goal keeper and the defense. Many commentators said that Belgium's win in their last Group 1 match was due to an unprepared South Korean side during the World Cup.
Hong Myung-Bo, South Korea boss, was under fire for losing to Algeria 4-2, ahead of the Belgium World Cup 2014 Group H Fixture.
