According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Harmon's comedy TV show Community, will be shown anew on Yahoo Screen. The series has been given the go-ahead for 13 brand new episodes. It is set to start screening in the fall.
The show's stars, Joel McHale,Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash are all coming back.
NBC has previously pulled the plug on the show last May, stating poor ratings. But insistent demands from the shows devoted fans had the show's executives shopping the series to other takers. Hulu was one of the earliest to express their interest in screening the series again, but it was the deal with Yahoo Screen that was completed.
"I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo," Harmon stated. "I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!"
Yahoo's Chief Marketing Officer, Kathy Savitt said in a statement, "Yahoo is all about connecting the best creators to the audiences who love their work .Community has an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base who have fought hard to keep this amazing show alive. We couldn't be more excited to work with Dan, Joel and the entire cast, as well as Sony, to deliver a great season six."
It was a triumph for fans of the show who very outspokenly expressed their dismay at the show's cancellation in social media and online forums. The show has a strong presence and following online. In Hulu, which has had the exclusive rights to home streaming of the show for the previous five seasons, it has been ranked as number one in the category of most-watched originals.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Television president of programming Zack Van Amburg says that there are no concrete plans yet of bringing the cult favorite show to the big screen, but that it might be in the horizon. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Van Amburg said, "It was not part of our Yahoo conversation. We were singularly focused on getting the series picked up but I think anything is possible."
