The Aaliyah biopic is in limbo after Zendaya Coleman dropped out of production as she claimed that the project fell below her expectations.
Lifetime released a statement through Twitter confirming that the 17-year-old is no longer part of the Aaliyah biopic: "We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold."
According to Entertainment Weekly, the casting of Zendaya Coleman was announced on June 16.
The executive producer, Debra Martin Chase, told the publication that they found "Aaliyah's spirit" in the "Shake it up!" actress which is the reason why they casted her. But the announcement generated controversy when the family of the late R&B star slammed the Aaliyah biopic producers for not consulting with them.
There's also the issue of Zendaya Coleman being "too light-skinned" to be the lead in the Aaliyah biopic.
The executive producer said that the criticism about the color of her skin was "ridiculous."
"What does that mean? What does it mean to be black enough? I'm African-American. What does that mean? She's biracial, but she identifies as black. She has a very strong black father. It's very narrow and short-sighted," she said.
Meanwhile, Zendaya Coleman weighed in on why she dropped out of the Aaliyah biopic.
"Basically, I just felt that because I love her, and because I respect her so much as an artist, I don't want to do anything that's half or anything that's less for her," she told HollywoodLife on June 29.
She said that there were some parts of the production that "weren't all the way there." The gossip website claimed that the family of Aaliyah felt that "a Lifetimebiopic wasn't big enough for her."
"The project wasn't all the way there. If I'm going to do something for someone I care about so much, I have to do it the right way," Zendaya Coleman said.
