"The Mysteries of Laura" will get a sneak preview after the "America's Got Talent' finale on September 17, as Debra Messing will star as the detective in the upcoming dramedy.
In a report by Deadline, the pilot episode will be shown at 10 p.m. on September 24, exactly a week after the "The Mysteries of Laura" sneak preview.
"The Mysteries of Laura" is a production of Warner Bros. TV, Kapital Entertainment and Berlanti Productions. It's billed as the only light drama among NBC's series next season.
Debra Messing will play Laura Diamond, an NYPD homicide detective who is trying to balance her "Columbo" day job with two naughty twin boys and while she tries to get her police officer husband to sign the divorce papers, Variety said.
During the TCA with the cast of "The Mysteries of Laura" on July 13, Debra Messing claimed that she was drawn to the series right away from reading the script.
"When I read the script it didn't feel to me that this is a new standard [or] an extreme case. I responded to something incredibly universal about the predicament," she said, per Deadline.
"It is the balance of the tone of drama and the comedy that is going to be the newest adventure and the newest challenge. That we haven't seen on network TV before," she added.
What's different about the series is the two kids and how bad they are, the showrunners said during the same event. For instance, in the pilot episode the two kids are caught peeing on each other.
Showrunner Jeff Rake described the twin boys, both 6 years old, as from "Breaking Bad."
When told that the peeing scene would be taking it a bit too far as far as pilots go, cast Josh Lucas explained: "It happens all the time. Kids do that. It's really not that horrible when you're 7, (and you tell your kids) you can't be doing this."
