One of the biggest couple stars in sports, Tennis star Maria Kirilenko and Hockey star Alex Ovechkin have broken off their engagement.
The athletic couple were first linked in 2011, following the end of Kirilenko relationship with fellow tennis player Igor Andreev. Marla and Alex were cofirmd a couple when Kirilenko began showing up at Capitals games in the stands, and later Ovechkin officially let the public know they were indeed an item. More than a year later at the end of 2012, the two confirmed they were engaged.
Russian Marla and three-time NHL MVP Alex's breakup went viral and an official release from Kirilenko's camp came out. Marla also addressed the breakup on social media, saying, "I have made a decision to break up our engagement. There are many reasons but I would not want to go into detail," she said. "I will just say that our relationship has ended but I respect Sasha as a person and an athlete, and I sincerely wish him athletic success in the future."
Meanwhile, Ovechkin, who hasn't commented publicly on the split, is hanging out with former KHL player Ruben Begunts and Brooklyn Nets forward Andrei Kirilenko in Saint-Tropez.
The Russian couple got engaged in December 2012 after about a year and a half of dating. The two attended each other's athletic events a lot and Ovechin's absence at Wimbledon last month sent rumors of a split flying.
Coincidentally, this isn't the only high-profile breakup in sports lately. Another big one is Roy McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki, who split and called off their engagement in late May. Their breakup did prove beneficial or at least didn't affect their plays as both emerged victorious in their respective sporting events on Sunday. McIlroy won his first British Open while Wozniacki won the Istanbul Cup final, clinching her first World Tennis Association title of the year and 22nd overall.
