The Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson rematch took a slight turn after "The Mauler" suffered an injury during camp and was immediately replaced by Daniel "DC" Cormier. "DC" also seems to hold a psychological advantage over the reigning light heavyweight champion.

In an official announcement made by the company through UFC.com, the supposed Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson rematch was scrapped due to "The Mauler's" torn knee meniscus he suffered during training.

Both men were slated to meet on Septemeber 27, as UFC 178's main event bout, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson rematch did not materialize right away. In mid-June when the fight was offered to "The Mauler" who immediately agreed, "Bones" was hesitant to sign his end of the deal. He even went as far as saying that the UFC "bullied" him to agreement.

"I thought it was unprofessional, I thought it was a bullying technique, bully style, I don't know what it was," Jones said in an interview with The MMA Hour. "But it is what it is."

Even the fight venue was initially debated about, which made the negotiations even more complicated. Sweden, which was "The Mauler's" home country was one of the choices, and was vehemently disagreed on by the champion.

"It won't be Sweden. No chance," Jones said. "I have no reason to. I'm the champ and he's the challenger, I don't find it appropriate for me to go to his back yard."

But the recent turn of events within the Gustafsson camp has made the UFC tag Daniel Cormier as a replacement. A former heavyweight competitor, "DC" moved to light heavyweight in the hopes of facing Jon Jones.

And for the former NCAA Division I wrestler, he holds a psychological advantage over the reigning champion.

"Jon Jones, you can't run away from me forever," Cormier said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan at UFC 173. "I'm the kid at the wrestling tournament that is always in your bracket. No matter where you go, I'm coming. You better hurry because I'm getting better."
