The much-awaited premiere of Downton's Abbey's newest season can't get here fast enough. Fans from both sides of the Atlantic are all eagerly awaiting the return of the Crawley family and their interesting team of servants, to get their dose of aristocratic drama and intrigue.
If there is one thing that the short teaser trailer to Downton Abbey season 5 that we can learn, it's that one thing is certain in the Crawley household: change.
A new cast of characters ranging from Russian refugees to old family friends is certain to shake things up at Downton. In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Gareth Neame tells us some Downton Abbey Season 5 spoilers:
"In the new season, we have the high-stakes drama, the laugh-out-loud comedy and the romance," Neame says. "We have all of the characters doing the things people love to see them doing, but we have a few really nice twists and turns as well."
Some fans dread twists and turns, as this means the possible deaths of their beloved characters. Neame talks about Matthew Crawley's surprising and untimely death in season 3, and what it meant for Lady Mary's character. He says that they had to kill of Matthew's character because the actor that played him was leaving the show.
"That door was closed. And we suddenly thought, "Actually, this is the best thing that could have happened to us." I'm actually really, really glad it happened. It gave us such a new direction to travel in for the show," explains Neame "Everyone wants Mary to be happy and for her to marry again, but nobody would want that to happen too quickly because they want to respect the memory of Matthew. It's about timing all those things correctly, and I really like the way we juggled two, maybe even three, suitors in the last season. She's still not quite sure, and I think there's a good hook for the audience in the fifth season to see which decision she's going to make.
Another Downton Abbey season 5 spoiler is about the budding romance between beloved Carson and Mrs. Hughes that was hinted at, at the close of last season. "I saw them as sort of a husband and wife very early on. Downton is about romantic love and companionship, and in that sense, they are one of the Downton relationships, even if they're not married," Neame shares. "Obviously that was a lovely tease at the end of last season, so we'll see what happens to them."
