Dan Aykroyd revealed the plans for "Ghostbusters 3" in an interview with Today while promoting his new movie, "Get On Up."
"It looks like we'll be in production, pre-production in the spring now, from what I'm hearing," Ayrkoyd said, regarding the new sequel. "It should be good."
This declaration, however, was met with a mix of hope and apprehension seeing as the "Ghostbusters 3" project has repeatedly met various setbacks in the past.
Some of its bigger stumbles include Bill Murray reportedly announcing that he won't be coming back to reprise his role as Dr. Peter Venkman. Harold Ramis (Dr. Egon Spengler) has also passed away. Although Ayrkoyd (Dr. Ray Stantz) and Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore) confirmed their return to the movie, no new casting has been made known.
This year, the production suffered another major setback with original director Ivan Reitman declining the offer to helm the sequel. Phil Lord and Chris Miller have reportedly said no to the job as well, while those rumors involving Ruben Fleischer didn't follow through.
Despite these stumbling blocks, Aykroyd is still optimistic that "Ghostbusters 3" will still get off the ground next year. He has been mentioning the filming to start the next year, every year, according to Slashfilm but so far, has not been worked on.
During the Today show interview, Aykroyd also shared some of his fondest memories while filming in the past "Ghostbusters" films.
"We owned the city here for a while," he told Today. He shared how people didn't recognize them in Manhattan at first, "stealing shots" with "no permits, nothing."
"It was just great, and we thought this was going to be a great experience," he continued. "And then we went out on Madison Avenue with the full rigs on, and it was pandemonium. Because people didn't know what we were yet. And here we are with the packs and the tube, that green tube that we have there. You know what that's for? When you see a ghost, you get scared, sometimes you lose it."
