"Sherlock" cast Benedict Cumberbatch dispelled rumors that he's going to play in Marvel's upcoming film "Doctor Strange," as "Sherlockmania" dominates the San Diego Comic-Con.
"As far as I'm aware, even if that was the case, it couldn't work out because I'm doing a little play called 'Hamlet' in London," "Sherlock" cast Benedict Cumberbatch said, as reported by ScreenRant. "So I don't think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It's a shame if I miss out, but who knows?"
The 38-year-old actor is one of the many celebrities who graced this year's Comic-Con in San Diego due to his roles in "Penguins of Madagascar" and "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies."
"A longtime subject of fan wishlists, speculation and rumors when it comes to his connections to Marvel, Cumberbatch was reported by the trades to be one of the contenders to play Doctor Strange or at least, a lead character in it just two months ago," the website reported.
While the cast has yet to be announced, directro Scott Derrickson was already tapped to helm "Doctor Strange."
Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that "Sherlock" cast Benedict Cumberbatch's presence in the event threatened to shut down Comic-Con. The activity area of Hall H has only a capacity of 6,500 but many of the attendees dressed as Sherlock Holmes filled the room to the brim, "despite this being a presentation that had nothing to do with the show whatsoever."
" This was the first sign that Sherlock mania had taken hold. As the panel began, Craig Ferguson, the moderator, threatened, 'If anyone mentions the S word, Comic Con will be cancelled,'" the publication said.
And during the Q&A session, six of the eight questions fielded at the "Penguins of Madagascar" panel were for "Sherlock" cast Benedict Cumberbatch, despite Oscar nominated actor John Malkovich being there.
