Former Cardiff City and QPR midfielder Tommy Smith have signed a new deal that will last for a year at Brentford.

The 34-year-old athlete had been on trial with the Bees since mid-July and had played in two of the club's pre-season friendlies. He also trained with the club for a period of three weeks and finally signing the contract on Thursday.

"I am delighted that the period Tommy spent training with us has come to a successful conclusion," Brentford manager Mark Warburton said.

"We always knew Tommy would add value on and off the pitch. He needed to find fitness after a season without much football at Cardiff."

Warburton added that Smith is a great asset for the squad and that he will bring in a new level of experience for his fellows. For certain, the midfielder will make a significant contribution to the club for the upcoming season.

"Tommy and his agent Steve Kutner have been a pleasure to deal with over the past few weeks." Sporting director Frank McParland said.

"Tommy has made it clear that he really wants to play for Brentford.

"All our discussions have been about how much Tommy wanted to join the Club and not about money, and that is great for us to hear."

"Mark and I are delighted we have concluded the deal and Tommy is now a Brentford player."

Smith joined Brentford as a free agent after his release from Cardiff which was relegated from the Premier League in the last season.

He has played 24 games as the Welsh side was promoted to the Premier League in 2012-13. However, he failed to make an appearance in the top flight.

Smith will join former Rochdale striker Scott Hogan among the new arrivals at Griffin Park, with Bees manager Warburton hopeful of further additions to his squad for the forthcoming season.
