Jon Jones' super fight with current UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is now a possibility says "Bones", who also sees New York City's Madison Square Garden as a possible venue.
Jon Jones's super fight against Chris Weidman has been clamored to happen since "The All-American" defeated the former pound-for-pound king of Mixed Martial Arts, Anderson "The Spider" Silva. But originally, "Bones" was not keen on the idea, stating that Chris Weidman still needed to "get his name bigger".
"A lot of people are starting to mention Chris Weidman's name and I think in order for it to be a superfight Chris Weidman needs to get his name a little bit bigger and prove himself against some other world champions," Jones told MMA Fighting in a February interview. "With that being said, I think Cain VelasThe quez is the only guy that would actually be considered a superfight."
The said statements were made prior to UFC 175, where Chris Weidman was slated to defend his title against another former champion, Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida.
But after "The All-American" was able to cancel out "The Dragon's" elusive fighting style and eventually come out with a dominating decision victory, Jon Jones had a sudden change of heart regarding the match-up.
"Oh, man, I think that would be awesome," Jones said in a recent interview with Sherdog. "I would absolutely jump at the opportunity to have a super fight with Chris Weidman. I respect him a lot as a person and as a champion, and I think that that fight would make great sales -- absolutely."
Should Jon Jones' super fight against Chris Weidman happen, "Bones" is eyeing Madison Square Garden as the likely venue, given that both fighters are New York natives. But while MMA has yet to be legalized in the said state, it has not stopped "Bones" from looking at the possibility.
"Muhammad Ali fought there, and Mike Tyson fought there," Jones continued. "The greatest fighters of all-time have all gotten to compete at the Garden, so I think that our time will come."
"I think that our proponents and our people will continue to push for it, and I think that eventually, we won't be ignored," he added. "They just can't ignore us forever."
