Which smartphone is worth the purchase? We pit the Samsung Galaxu S5 Mini against the HTC Desire 816 to see which is better.

In terms of design and display, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED display, with a maximum resolution of 720 x 1280 and a pixel density of 326ppi, while the HTC Desire 816 has a much bigger display, measured at 5.5 inches and using the Super LCD2 technology. Although the screen size is bigger on the HTC handset, the resolution is the same as its rival, and the pixel density is much smaller at 267ppi.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini takes design features a dotted back cover. The edges of the smartphone are covered by a fake metal band, being in some ways similar to the Galaxy S5. The HTC Desire 816 is made out of a polycarbonate plastic material, which gives it a glossy appearance, but the device falls short in terms of design, from the critically acclaimed HTC One M8. The HTC smartphone is 0.31 inches thick and has 166 grams, while the Samsung unit is at 0.36 inches, but in the same time weighs only 120 grams.

For the hardware and OS, Both smartphones have the same amount of RAM memory: 1.5 GB, and both devices host a quad core processor. The difference is, the processor inside the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is an Exynos 3 quad core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, while the HTC Desire 816's processor is a 1.6 GHz quad core processing unit developed by Qualcomm, namely the Snapdragon 400.

Both smartphones come with Android 4.2 KitKat as their operating system, but neither of them run a pure stock version of Google’s software. Samsung has topped off the 4.2 Android with its personal TouchWiz user interface, while HTC is using its own interface over the stock Android, the HTC Sense UI. The HTC device has an internal memory of 8 GB, while Samsung has a 16 GB of internal storage space. The microSD card for the HTC, however, is capable of storing up to 128 GB, while a 64 GB of expandable memory is offered to the Galaxy S5 Mini.

For the battery and camera specs, the HTC Desire 816 has a rear camera of 13 MP, while the front facing lens is at 5 MP. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini on the other hand, has only 8 MP on its rear facing camera, while the front facing shooter is at 2.1 MP. Both smartphones have their cameras equipped with LED flash.

They also have Li-ion powered batteries, but with different capacities. The HTC device has 2600 mAh while the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini battery has 2100 mAh.

In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini comes with a fingerprint scanner and heart-rate monitor, and also is IP67 certified as dust and water resistant. It also features an Ultra Power Saving Mode, which can come in handy on long days when there’s no charging option in sight.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is worth $500, while HTC Desire 816 is around $375.
