The possibility of seeing a "Flash Gordon" movie remake holds much promise after Twentieth Century Fox snapped up the screen rights for the sci-fi comic book character- and with that looms the biggest question on everyone's minds: Who will play the lead?
Total Film credited Mike Hodges for his screen adaptation of the intergalactic epic saga in 1980, with Sam Jones (info courtesy of IMDB) in the lead role and a soundtrack performed by Queen. Although speculations of a "Flash Gordon" movie remake has been circulating online for years now, it was not until recently that Fox decided to give its plot a long-awaited update.
At present, the behind-the-scenes key positions are being filled in, reported NME. On board is John Davis as the producer. Working on the "Flash Gordon" movie remake script are Star Trek 3 screenwriters Patrick McKay and JD Payne. Matt Reilly of "The Lego Movie" will be the overall manager. And for the titular role of Flash Gordon...Well, no actor has been chosen yet.
However, Screenrant (2 candidates: Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds) and JoBlo (1 candidate: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) had named their rumored candidates early on.
- Sam Worthington - Sam turned into a household name overnight with the global success of the behemoth sci-fi movie "Avatar." It also helped that he played the lead role in "Terminator Salvation." With all these credits to his name, Screenrant expressed no surprise why he would be considered for the role. The only possible drawback (for FG fans) could be his nationality: Flash Gordon is all-American while he is Australian.
- Ryan Reynolds - The Canada-born "Green Lantern" star is no stranger to playing hero. Fox's considering him for the role would hardly come as surprise given his credentials and fanbase. When Screenrant featured him as one of the rumored candidates, he was completely preoccupied with other film projects. Setting aside nationality issues this time, they cited schedule conflicts as the top hindrance.
- Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - JoBlo cited the similarities between "The Rock" and Flash Gordon as the main reasons for the former's being a perfect fit for the title role. One, they were both football players before. Two, according to the site, he had an experience in battling aliens - in some of his previous roles, that is.
