It was quite a terrible time to be Anna in last season's Downton Abbey. The sweet and lovely ladies maid suffered a most terrible fate at the hands of the valet of Lady Mary's suitor, Lord Gillingham.
Seizing an opportunity when a party was in full swing upstairs, Lord Gillingham's valet raped Anna downstairs. Anna suffered in silence, but did not say anything to her husband Mr. Bates, although her cold and indifferent demeanor towards him did signal that something had gone horribly wrong. The last season ended with a big question mark, when Anna's attacker ended up in a car accident in London, which happened just as Bates was also in London as well.
We don't know if Bates did it, and if he did -- will he end up in prison again with the possibility of being hanged for his crime? Vanity Fair magazine was able to talk to Joanne Frogatt who plays Anna, and she gave away some tantalizing hints for Downton Abbey season 5 spoilers, and the fate of our favorite downstairs couple, Anna and Mr. Bates.
"They start Season 5 in a not-so-positive light," she says. "Obviously they have a lot to overcome and it won't happen very quickly. And they may never get to the end. There's still this cloud hanging over them. They're trying to find the space to heal themselves and move forward with their lives."
The 34-year old actress continues her Downton Abbey season 5 spoiler hints, "There's also the issue of Mr. Green's death. Which keeps getting brought back up. It's difficult to escape this thing they're trying to escape. There are some moments of happiness though."
