Jon Jones' next fight postponement has been explained by "Bones'" own teammate Alistair Overeem. "The Reem" clarified that what happened was merely a "freak accident" they have encountered during training.
Jon Jones' next fight was originally scheduled for UFC 178 on September 27th, but the reigning champion was forced to pull out of the bout due to an injury he sustained during training.
The new date for Jon Jones' next fight against Daniel Cormier is January 3rd for UFC 182's main event bout.
The fighter's trainer Greg Jackson explained the entire situation, which involved another teammate, heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem.
"It's part of the game, it wasn't like somebody went for a flying kick and dislocated [something]," Jackson said in an interview with Sherdog.com in mid-August. "Somebody went for a takedown, [Jones] stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way and down he went.
"He was fighting it, and he just twisted it. And then it just popped," he continued. "Alistair's maybe 240, Jon's 220. It's not like he was working with a giant moose. It was just one of those things."
A week after the incident transpired, Jon Jones had immediately undergone surgery for his injured knee, which was deemed a success.
Alistair Overeem, on the other hand, went on to explain his side of the story. In a report by Yahoo! Sports, "The Reem" also received flak from UFC President Dana White after the company executive deemed it senseless for a fighter like Overeem to train with Jones, given the major disparity and fighting styles and weight difference.
"The Reem" rightfully defended himself, saying that "Bones'" injury was merely a product of a "freak accident" in training.
"This was just one of those freak accidents on a takedown," Overeem said in a separate interview with MMA Junkie. "Listen, I was looking forward to that fight. Everybody was looking forward to that fight. Jon Jones was looking forward to it."
"Accidents happen. There's no fault to blame," he added. "What is he doing training with me? We're in the same gym. We're teammates. We have lunch (together) and we drive around together."
